Baptized Jean-Baptiste Desgagnés. Son of Éphrem Desgagner (deceased in 1885) and Agnès Larouche. His mother remarried to François Gaudreault in 1889 and moved to Mistassini, Lac St-Jean, Québec.
Jean-Baptiste stated being born on 22 August and being 35 years-old. His biological father, his adoptive father, his mother as well as himself were illiterate; it is therefore not possible to determine the correct spelling of the last name.
