Baptized Joseph-Georges-Adélard Brière. Son of George-Alexandre Bruyère-dit-Brière and Célina Tendlene. He married Clérinda « Claire-Ida » Guay in 1908, of Montréal, Québec.
He enlisted twice. The first time, he enlisted under “Joseph Brière” and the second time, he enlisted as “Joseph-André Brière”.
Enlisted for the first time on 11 August 1915 in the 69th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, regimental number 120203, he was considered a deserter on 20 October and discharged from the army on the 25th. Enlisted a second time on 4 December 1915 with the 150th Overseas Battalion, Mount Royal Rifles, regimental number 847006, he arrived in England on 6 October 1916. On 28 November, he was transferred to the 22nd Battalion and sent to France the same day. On 4 December, he went to the front line. He was killed in action on 27 April 1917 during the Battle of Vimy, Pas-de-Calais, in the Souchez and Scape river area.

Thelus is a village 7 kilometres north of Arras and BOIS-CARRE BRITISH CEMETERY is about half a mile east of the village on the south side of the D49 road to Bailleul-sire-Berthoult.
