The Woodstock War Memorial was erected in 1925, by the citizens of Woodstock through the initiative and efforts of the Havelock Chapter, Imperial Order of the Daughters of the Empire. It is a silent and permanent testimonial to the boys of the city and vicinity within a radius of six miles who gave their lives for the benefit of mankind in the First World War. It was unveiled on August 30, 1925, by His Honour the Lieutenant-Governor, Henry Cockshutt, with a crowd of over five thousand in attendance. The Memorial was designed and executed by Coeur de Lion MacCarthy, artist-sculptor of Montreal, with the assistance of The Anglin-Norcross Company. Later, names were added to commemorate the Second World War, Korean War, and Afghanistan.

The monument is considered a mural cenotaph and is made of Stanstead grey granite, from Quebec, and bronze, with originally nearly two thousand letters cut into the stone. The foundation extends over five feet into the earth while The Globe, being the top piece of the monument, sits five feet wide.

In 2010, the city began restoration of the monument. The work included re-pointing and caulking the joints, repairing the mortar, cleaning the granite, and reapplying the names of the city’s war dead that had begun to fade. The yearlong project, completed in 2011, ensured that misspelled names were corrected, while overlooked names and new names were added. In doing so, the complete lists of names were etched onto new slabs of polished granite that were applied on top of the existing monument.
