The City of Ottawa erected Bolton Street dedicated to Major (later Lieutenant-Colonel) Daniel Bolton (1793-1860). He commissioned in the Royal Engineers in 1811 and saw service in the Peninsular Wars as well as Ghent (Belgium) and France. He arrived in Canada in 1826 working with Lieutenant-Colonel By on the Rideau Canal. Upon the return of By to England in 1832, Major Bolton replaced Lieutenant-Colonel By as Superintending Engineer for the Rideau Canal and held the position until 1843. He returned to England, was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel in 1846 and left for New Zealand that same year. In 1853, he left for the Cape Colony and then England and returned to Cape Town in 1855. He died in Cape Town in 1860.
