The Experimental Station,
Suffield

In the darkest days of the worldwide struggle against the Axis powers,
Canada took the lead in countering the potential use, by those enemy
countries, of chemical warfare agents. From 1941 to 1945, the battle to
provide effective defence against such weapons of mass destruction was
conducted at both the Experimental Station in Suffield, Alberta, and the
Chemical Warfare Laboratories in Ottawa, where military personnel
participated in many hazardous and secret trials. The results of their efforts
provided the foundation for the Allies' chemical agent countermeasures,
but, as a consequence of the secrecy required, the contributions made by
these members to the defence of Canada and the victory of the United
Nations could not be acknowledged. After 1945 Canada's national security
required continued, unheralded participation by volunteers in chemical
warfare agent tests. The collective service of all these participants was
significant, and while their efforts were unknown in the past, their duty
was, by every measure, exceptional, and was gratefully recognized by the
Government of Canada on 19 February 2004.

The Suffield Experimental Station was established by Order in Council
PC/16687 on 26 August 1941. Since that date, a number of National Defence
scientific institutions in southern Alberta, known by a variety of names
but with a common purpose, have advanced the protection capability of
Canadian Forces personnel through incomparable research and
development efforts. This tremendous body of work assembled over the
past 60 years could not have been accomplished without the active
participation of test subjects

THOMAS NEIL TROTT
19 JULY 1997
Tom Trott arrived in the Cypress Hills in June 1980. His background with the
Royal Canadian Engineers and the Alberta Forest Service served him well with
the numerous challenges he faced here as the Park Forest Officer.

In his 16 year career, Tom developed a reputation of integrity, leadership and
having a sharp mind. Additionally he displayed unrivalled concern about the
park and support for his staff. Tom was also known for his sense of humor and
ability to tell a story.

Tom’s untimely death on September 10, 1996 prevented him from achieving
a dream – a dream of turning the Medicine Lodge fire tower site into a
forestry museum.

Cypress Hills Park staff invite you to enjoy the Tom Trott Forestry Museum
in his memory, and in memory of the Forest Officers who preceeded him.

THE 175TH
OVERSEAS BATTALION
C.E.F.

THE 175TH WAS MEDICINE HAT'S OWN REGIMENT. IT WAS FORMED AND RECRUITED EARLY IN 1916 FOR FIRST WORLD WAR SERVEC. THE REGIMENT EMBARKED FOR ENGLAND ON SEPTEMBER 26, 1916 AND ULTIMATELY JOINED OTHER ALBERTA UNITS IN ACTION ON THE BELGIUM AND FRENCH FRONTS. THEY REMAINED IN ACTION UNTIL THE WAR'S END AND THEIR BATTLE HONORS WERE MANY. OF THE 1000 OFFICERS AND MEN, 206 WERE KILLED, 326 WOUNDED AND 85 RECEIVED GALLENTRY DECORATIONS.

THE 'IMMORTAL FLAME" ON THIS MONUMENT WAS DEDICATED AT THE 50TH REUNION OF THE REGIMENT ON SEPTEMBER 25, 1966 TO COMMEMORATE THOSE MEN OF THE REGIMENT WHO DIED ON THE BATTLEFIELD AND THOSE WHO RETURNED IN HONOUR.

"WE SHALL BE FOREVER GRATEFUL AND PROUD OF THEIR EFFORTS". THE CITIZENS OF MEDICINE HAT.
