The Merchant Navy Commemorative Theme Project will host a short wreath-laying ceremony to mark the anniversary of the sinking of the Llandovery Castle. On June 27, 1918, the Canadian hospital ship Llandovery Castle was torpedoed by German submarine U‑86 while en route from Halifax to Liverpool. Clearly marked as a protected medical vessel, it was unlawfully attacked and then its lifeboats were fired upon, leaving only 24 survivors out of 258 people on board. The tragedy is remembered as one of the worst war atrocities against a Canadian hospital ship during the First World War.
