LIONEL BEAUMAURICE (LEO) CLARKE, V.C.
1892 - 1916

Born near Waterdown, Ontario, Leo Clarke moved to Winnipeg
in 1903. He enlisted with the 27th Battalion, C.E.F. in
February 1915 and transferred to the 2nd Canadian Battalion
later that year. On September 9, 1916, on the Somme battle-
front, though wounded, Corporal Clarke single-handedly defended
a recently-won trench. Using a revolver and two captured
rifles he repulsed an attack by two enemy officers and about
twenty others, thus helping to secure the Canadian position.
For his courageous action he received the British Empire's
highest award for valour, the Victoria Cross. Before his
award was announced, however, Corporal Clarke was killed in
battle on October 19, 1916, and is buried near Le Havre, France.

The St. Andrew by-the-lake Anglican Church First World War Honour Roll was unveiled on the east wall of the nave and dedicated to the islanders who died in the First World War. The honour roll was made of wood and faced with brass.

The Soldiers Memorial Monument was erected by the citizens of Dundas in loving and grateful memory of their brave boys who gave their lives for Freedom in the Great War and for the Empire in the South African War. It was unveiled December 11, 1921, at its original location on the south side of the King and Sydenham intersection by his Honour Lieutenant-Governor Cockshutt. The spot became known as Memorial Square.

In 1920, a committee was formed to raise funds for the project. Canvassers went door-to-door collecting money to make it a community-wide effort. As costs grew beyond the planned $6,500, more donations were needed. Postcards of the memorial were sold to raise money owed on construction, which eventually cost the town more than $7,000. Ottawa sculptor Hamilton MacCarthy was commissioned to create the bronze statue atop the monument. Initial plans were to place it in the Dundas Driving Park, but it was decided King and Sydenham provided greater visibility. A planned November 11, 1921, unveiling was postponed due to delays finishing the statue.

A time capsule was placed inside the pedestal, including a list of Dundas soldiers, a 1921 voter’s list, town pictures and uniform buttons. A plaque was attached listing names of Dundas men who died in the First World War and Boer War. More plaques were added recognizing those who served in the Second World War, Korean War and in Afghanistan. In November 1963, to widen the street and provide access to the fire hall, the monument was moved to its current location outside the Dundas Lions Memorial Community Centre.

This memorial was constructed in October 1925 in memory of those who died in the First and Second World Wars.

The two stone cairns, one on each side of the entrance to the Ancaster Township Hall, were unveiled October 17, 1925, originally with identical plaques. After the Second World War the plaque on the left was replaced with a plaque for those killed in that war. The metal arch, whose ends were supported by the cairns was removed in 1967 for safety reasons and returned at a later date.

In the summer of 1920, the West Garafraxa Township Memorial Committee chose the design for their cenotaph - a statue of a soldier carved in white Italian marble, standing at ease beside a grey granite stone with the names of the fallen set in metal lettering. It was unveiled at George and Queen Streets on July 31, 1021. The statue was removed in 2008 because it was showing considerable wear and a granite replacement statue was installed.

The original statue was restored by Conservator Patty Whan and moved to the Archives wing of the Wellington County Museum and Archives. Many parts of the original statue were missing and had to be reconstructed, including the soldier’s nose, hat brim, bayonet scabbard, and rifle sight, strap, trigger, and trigger guard. The repaired statue was installed on a new base in the courtyard on June 17, 2010.

Doctor Norman Craig, a surgeon and a Veteran of the Great War, raised funds for a war memorial, in 1933 when he wrote and staged a play based on his experiences in the war - “You’re Lucky if You’re Killed.”  The newly formed Fergus Legion and Doctor Craig helped to plan, pay for and build the Fergus Cenotaph, which he later called “a small, overdue payment on a large debt.”

Following Doctor Craig’s death in 1964, the memorial park was rededicated in his honour.

In 1927, the Drayton Women’s Institute, led by then-president Isabel (Peggy) Henderson, took matters into their own hands to construct a soldiers' memorial for the Townships of Maryborough and Peel. They took the lead in planning, funding, and realizing Drayton’s Memorial Park, timed to coincide with the Old Boys’ and Girls’ Reunion that was to take place over three days in July. Land for the park was donated by shopkeeper O. B. Henry, who was also Secretary for the Reunion Committee.

Clifford’s Memorial Park was purchased by the Village of Clifford in 1909 and was known as Central Park before it was repurposed and renamed in 1921. A park was chosen because the village wanted a memorial that would also serve as a gathering place for its residents to enjoy. William Hood, father of fallen soldier Private William Allan Hood, brought his team of Percheron horses to the site to level the ground.

The creation of Memorial Park and the Clifford Cenotaph was led by the Village Council and funded by an addition to the year’s property tax rate.
