- Maj David B. Bridgford, ON- 1st Bn VA Inf. (The Irish Bn). Provost Marshall to LGen Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson. Surrendered at Appomattox Court House, VA. April 9th 1865.
- Dr. John Lang Bray- served as a Confederate Army Surgeon in Richmond, VA. Later became President of the Canadian Medical Association. Born: Kingston, ON.
- 1st Lt. William Winer Cooke- Regt Adjt U.S. 7th Cavalry. Wounded at Petersburg, VA during the American Civil War. Later served as Bvt LCol under BGen George A. Custer. Killed at Little Big Horn June 25th, 1876. Born: Mount Pleasant, ON. Buried: Hamilton, ON.
- François-Joseph d’Avignon- Commissioned surgeon. Major- 96th NY Inf. Regt. One of the leaders of the 1837-38 rebellion in Canada. Captured but returned at end of war. Born: St-Mathias, QC.
- Franklin Devereux, QC- Enrolled 16th ME 1862. Killed at Gettysburg July 1st, 1863.
- Capt. Edward P. Doherty- 16th NY Cavalry. Led the detachment who captured John Wilkes Booth (President Lincoln’s assassin). Born: Montreal, QC.
- Sara Emma Edmonds- 2nd MI Infantry. Soldier, nurse and spy. Disguised herself as a man (Franklin Thompson). Awarded a US Army pension. Born: Moncton, NB>
- John “Jock” Fleming- A legendary Halifax pilot who served on the Confederate raider CSS Talahassee, later known as the blockade runner CSS Chameleon. Born: Halifax, NS.
- Sgt John A. Huff, ON- 5th Regt MI Cavalry. Served under BGen George A. Custer. On May 11th, 1864 at Battle of Yellow Tavern, VA, he fatally shot Confederate MGen J.E.B. Stuart. Later, on May 28th, 1864, during Battle of Hawes Shop, VA, Sgt Huff was shot and later died.
- Pvt Oliver Ar-Pe-Targe-Zhik.- “indigenous” soldier. Born Walpole Island ON, 1844. Enlisted in Co K, 1st MI Sharpshooters June 17th, 1863. Died July 9th, 1864, from wounds received at Peterburg, VA, June 17th, 1864. Buried at National Cemetery, Arlington, VA.

- Ben Jackson- African Canadian who enlisted and later rose in rank to become Gun captain aboard USS Richmond. Born: Nova Scotie.
- 1st Lt. Calixa Lavallée- 4th RI Volunteers. Born: Verchères, QC. Composer of ‘’O Canada’’, Canada’s national anthem.
- Captain James A. Lothian- Wounded Jan 16th. 1864, leading his Regiment at Petersbirg and died a month later of his wounds. Born : Breadalbane, ON.
- Captain A.J. McDonald- Rose through the artillery ranks to become Inspector of Artlliery in the Army of the Ptomac. Born : Glengarry County, ON.
- Sgt James McLaughlin, Toronto, ON- 21st MS Inf Regt. Killed at “The Wheatfield”, Gettysburg, PA, Jul 2nd 1863. Buried at Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, VA.
- Dr. Alexander Milton Ross- Served as a Regt. Surgeon Union Army. Spy and agent for the secret Underground Railway slave escape network. He was known as “The Birdman” for his preferred cover story as an ornithologist. Born: Belleville, ON. Died: Detroit, MI.
- Rev Dr James Beach Moore- Quaker, later Baptist. Aide de Camp to MGen Philip Kearney, Army of the Potomac, VA. Born 1842 Norwich, ON. Died 1931 Waterford, ON. “Oldest Canadian survivor of the American Civil War”.
- Cpl Andrew L. Ramsey, Canada- 31st GA Volunteer Inf, Co B. “Muscogee Confederates”. Died March 3rd, 1862. Buried: Beaulieu, GA.
- Capt Albert Roberts, Hamilton, ON- 20th TN Regt. Served under BGen Felix Zollicoffer who was killed at Battle of Mills Springs KY, Jan 1862.
- Dr Solomon Secord- Grand nephew of Laura Secord. Joined the Southern Army (20th Regt. GA Vol. Inf.) as a surgeon even with his anti-slavery views. In 1864, promoted to Surgeon General CSA. Born: Kincardine, ON.
- Samuel Tiebout (Thibault) QC. 5th NY Inf Regt. Enrolled 1861; promoted to Capt. Jan 1862.
- Benjamin Weir- Confederate trader. Blockade runner. Halifax agent for many Confederate Blockade runners active during the Civil War. Born: Newport Township, NS.
- Lt (USN) Samuel L. Preston, London, ON- He was a Flag-Lieutenant to Rear Admiral David D. Porter )North Atlantic Blockade Squadron. Killed while leading amphibious assault of sailors and Marines at 2nd battle of Fort Fisher, NC, Jan 15th, 1865. Currently, since his death, six US naval ships have been named “USS Preston” for his heroism.
- Capt (N) John Taylor Wood, CSA Navy. Known as a leading Confederate naval hero. He was a Lieutenant serving aboard the CSS Virginia when it engaged USS Monitor, Mar 9th, 1862. Survived war, returned to Halifax, NS and is buried there.
- 54th MA- U.S. Colored Troops (of “Glory” fame). Some examples are: John Weeks & Silas Garrison, Chatham, ON- killed on assault at Fort Wagner, SC (July 18th, 1863). Moses Jackson & Elias S. Rouse, Walden, ON- wounded at Fort Wagner, SC, Thomas M. Smith & James Haskell, Montreal, QC- fought and survived.
- 20th USCT had 67 Canadian in their ranks. Some examples below: David Walters & George Jarvis, NS- fought and survived. James Benjamin, NS; Jacob Jacobs, Can; Isaac Wilson, Can; Jacob Hicks, Can; John Martin, Can; George Montgomery, Can. All died of disease. Buried under “unknown” in Monument Nat. - 102nd USCT- Henry Williams, Chatham, ON; Eli Hall, ON; Joseph Marshall, ON; Samuel Patterson, Malden, ON; all died of typhoid fever. Buried in Beaufort Nat. Cemetery, SC.
