The only woman from Nissouri Township to serve overseas during the First World War was Nursing Sister Ada Lillian Buckle. She served with No. 10 Stationary Hospital, established by Western University medical faculty, from May 1917. She returned to Thorndale in June 1923 to unveil the cenotaph.
The memorial was dedicated to the memory of those who fell and in honour of those who fought and survived the First World War. Later, the Second World War was added to the cenotaph.
MCDONALD ST
McDonald Street was named in 1915 for Lieutenant John William McDonald who was killed in the battle of Givenchy in June 1915. Lieutenant McDonald was one of the finest as well as one of the youngest soldiers from Stratford to go in the First Contingent.
LIGHTBOURNE AVE
Lightbourne Avenue was named for Ven. Francis Gwynne Lightbourne who served in France and Belgium during the First World War and was chaplain of the Perth Regiment for 23 years. During the Second World War, he served with the Canadian Chaplain Service.

The St. Marys Cenotaph commemorates the soldiers of St. Marys who fought and fell in the First World War. It was unveiled on Monday, November 7, 1921, three years after the armistice of 1918. It is on the main road in St. Marys beside Town Hall in the downtown where the first celebrations were held after the armistice. Initially, the names of sixty-five soldiers who died during the First World War from the St. Marys area were placed on the memorial.
The memorial features a stoic British solider standing at attention, facing forward on a pillar. This kind of memorial is common in Perth County and celebrates the human individuals in war. All four sides feature inscriptions of the names of the local fallen, later amended to include the Second World War. The local Women’s Institute funded this memorial.
The first official Armistice Day ceremony held in St. Marys did not occur until 1924 and was organized by the Women’s Institute. These ceremonies continue to be held annually at the St. Marys Cenotaph. The area surrounding the cenotaph was officially named Memorial Park in June 2008 to commemorate the citizens of the community who served, or who will serve.

Construction of the Soldiers Memorial Monument began in August of 1919 by Portfield and Colquhoun Monument Works. It stands 18 feet high and is constructed of solid grey granite. On the top is a large dove with spreading wings, carrying an olive branch in its mouth and on either side of the dove stands a shell. The cenotaph was erected to pay tribute to the 67 men from Mitchell, Fullarton, Hibbert, and Logan. Their names are carved into the granite on the four sides under the battle they fought in: Ypres, St. Julien, Paschendale and Vimy Ridge.
In 1921, the railing, curb and lights were added with the lights being turned on for the first time that year on November 11. In August of 1959, with the help of the local Legion, new curbs, a larger grassed area and the removal of the old bandstand took place. At the end of the World War Two 28 more names were added to the cenotaph.
CORIANO ST
Coriano Street was named by a special subcommittee of City Council in 1946. It honours the Perth Regiment and commemorates the battle of Coriano Ridge, Italy.
To prevent the capture of Rimini, the Germans reinforced the surrounding region, particularly at Coriano Ridge, a feature that dominated the coastline and the approaches by land. The entire Canadian Corps had set out against the Adriatic sector with the ultimate aim of liberating Rimini in late August 1944. On the 25th, they crossed the Metauro River, one of half-a-dozen rivers in the path of the advance. On September 3rd, the Canadians set their sights on the ridge. The Royal Canadian Dragoons cleared Riccione using their armoured cars. At the same time, the 5th Division headed inland and took the village of Misano. The latter group was now to take Coriano Ridge, but the rains began and, combined with German resistance, held them up.
On September 12 the 1st British and 5th Canadian Armoured Divisions of the Eighth Army resumed the advance on the ridge. The entire corps artillery pounded the enemy front. The next day, after heavy fighting - including house-to-house battles - the Canadians possessed the ridge. The Perth Regiment penetrated by 2 a.m., and the engineers and tanks soon followed.

This monument is dedicated to the men of the former Elma Township, who gave their lives in the two World Wars. The memorial consists of a black granite base with the names and dedications, topped by the white marble statue of a World War I soldier.

On Sunday, May 8, 1949, a bronze tablet bearing the names of the men of the Village of Rosseau and the Townships of Cardwell and Humphrey who fell in the First and Second World Wars was unveiled at the Rosseau Memorial Community Hall.
