The historic Bomarc missile displayed in Veterans Park no longer stands as a visible symbol of the city's role during the Cold War.

On September 15, 2009, the missile was removed by the National Museum of the United States Air Force, which had loaned the weapon to the city since 1979 when it was erected by the North Bay Kiwanis Club as a historic memorial. The missile had deteriorated to the point where it could no longer be maintained.

The missile represented a part of the community's history that intrinsically tied it to global events and a positive relationship with the U. S.

A total of 56 of the nuclear-armed surface-to-air interceptor missiles were in sevice in Canada at North Bay and La Macaza, Quebec, from 1961 to 1972. In North Bay, there were 28 missiles located at the former Bomarc missile base,- the site on Highway 11 north of the city which eventually became the Canadore College Heliport.

THE BATTLE OF VIMY RIDGE
APRIL 9, 1917

ALWAYS SEEKING THE ELUSIVE BREAKTHROUGH, THE ALLIES PLANNED A MASSIVE OFFENSIVE IN EARLY 1917.  THE CANADIAN CORPS WITH ALL FOUR OF ITS DIVISIONS WOULD DELIVER AN ATTACK AGAINST VIMY RIDGE.  THE RIDGE WAS THE KEY TO THE HINDENBURG LINE IN THE GERMAN DEFENCE SYSTEM.  THE VICTORY AT VIMY RIDGE CAME SWIFTLY.  IT DID NOT COME WITHOUT COST.  3,598 DEAD AND 10,602 CASUALTIES.  THIS VICTORY WAS THE PROFOUND TURNING POINT FOR THE ALLIES, AS A YEAR AND A HALF LATER THE WAR WAS OVER.

TOUJOURS À LA RECHERCHE DE LA PERCÉE INSAISISSABLE, LES ALLIÉS ONT PLANIFIÉ UNE IMMENSE OFFENSIVE. TÔT EN 1917 LE CORPS CANADIEN AVEC SES QUATRE DIVISIONS A LANCÉ UNE ATTAQUE CONTRE LA CRÊTE DE VIMY. LA CRÊTE QUI ETAIT LA CLÉ DE LA LIGNE HINDENBURG
DU SYSTÈME DE DÉFENSE ALLEMAND. MÊME SI LA VICTOIRE À VIMY A ÉTÉ RAPIDE, ELLE A ÉTÉ COÛTEUSE AVEC 10 602 BLESSÉS DONT 3 598 MORTS. CETTE VICTOIRE A ÉTÉ UN IMPORTANT POINT CULMINANT POUR LES ALLIÉS, CAR UNE ANNÉE ET EMIE PLUS TARD, LA GUERRE A PRIT FIN

The Vimy Ridge Memorial Wall was dedicated in November, 2000.  It has individual plaques for each soldier from this district who was lost in the battle. A smaller wall gives a brief history of the battle and acknowledges the generous sponsors of Project Flanders. Plaques used on Memorial Drive to assign a particular tree to a specific fallen soldier were taken out of storage and placed on the Vimy Ridge Memorial Wall. Plaques were also added to honour the Second World war.

The North Bay Cenotaph and North Bay Memorial Wall are also located here.

The original Nipissing First Nation Cenotaph was erected by members of the Nipissing First Nation and dedicated to Anishinaabe war dead and Veterans of the First and Second World Wars. Following an inspection by Nipissing First Nation facilities manager Patrick Stevens, the decision was made to replace the community’s old cenotaph. Stevens says he stuck his finger three inches into a rotted area of the old cedar monument.

The unveiling of the new Nipissing First Nation Cenotaph was held on November 11, 2019. Captain Kim Munro walked with other soldiers in the procession. Leading the way were artist Dan Commanda, Nipissing First Nation Councillor Rick Stevens and Elder Evelyn McLeod with Anishinabek Nation Grand Council Chief Glen Hare. The young students of Lady of Sorrows Elementary School sang O Canada in Anishinaabemowin. A flag song was sung with the big drum and the Sacred Fire was heard crackling during the two minutes of silence. The cenotaph is dedicated to those who lost their lives, who served in any capacity, and those who continue to serve. The community was able to add names that were previously missing, such as those who fought in the Korean War.

Speaking in the language and English on the valour of the men and women who volunteered for the First and Second World Wars and the Korean War, Nipissing First Nation Deputy Chief Muriel Sawyer unveiled the black marble cenotaph. “The many sacrifices they made so that we may enjoy the freedom that we so often take for granted. They were not obligated to enlist in the world wars, but they did so willingly, knowing the hardships they would encounter and endure. Many of our members did not return. And we owe them a debt of gratitude.”

The cenotaph includes artwork by artist Dan Commanda. Photos of four of the five soldiers killed in action during the Second World War are etched in the black marble, a Canadian military eagle staff that took 16 hours to engrave, and the logos of the Algonquin Regiment, army, air force, navy, and the medal for Aboriginal Veterans.

On the back are two deer/wawashkesh, a row of soaring eagles spread across the top and an epitaph poppy dreamcatcher. “Every time we recognize our people, our warriors, anybody who contributes to the community, they’re honoured with an eagle feather,” Commanda said, “and those eagles on the back of the epitaph they represent the honouring of those ones who defended our borders in all the wars.”

As the procession took shape for the start of the ceremony, Dan saw an eagle fly overhead. “It just reminds me, it reminds us, that that eagle is always there for our community.”

Upgrades to the cenotaph started in the fall of 2019. The entire structure, including the concrete base, was removed. The existing plaque was carefully removed and safely stored. This project was funded by Veterans Affairs Canada and the Nipissing First Nation Trust Fund.

This memorial is dedicated to the 22 Wing and was officially opened on June 8, 2011.  It features storyboards describing important events and the rich history of the airbase in the city.

Doug Newman, CD2 re-organized the Air Defence Park and designed the memorial signs.  Wing Imagery created the signs from the designs and produced electronic files, which in turn were manufactured for display in the park by a local company.  The person in charge of the project was Major John Blair, at the time the 22 Wing Air Reserve Flight Commander.

The Air Defence Park also commemorates two Royal Air Force airmen who were killed in a flying training accident at the airfield during the Second World War, six years before the air base was founded.  They were the first aviation deaths of any kind, military or civilian, in the North Bay region.  One was from England, the other Scottish; hence an oak tree and Scotch Pine were planted in the park in their honour.

This memorial was constructed in August 1920, in memory of "Our Boys who fell in the Great War 1914 - 1918". This Gothic shaped monument that was created by Hayes Bros, is constructed from Scotch Granite and stands seven feet high. It is traditionally engraved with names, dates, flags, rifles, and maple leafs. The monument was erected by The Women's Institute of Trout Creek at a total cost of Two Hundred and Fifty Dollars. The names of those from the community who gave their lives during the Second World War were subsequently added.

This memorial was erected on June 19, 1927, in memory of "Those who fell in the Great War 1914 - 1918". The monument was erected and paid for by the Imperial Order of Daughters of the Empire (I.O.D.E.), Powassan Chapter.

The names of those from the community who gave their lives during the Second World War were subsequently added on a plaque, and a second plaque with more names was added on the back. The Korean War and Peacekeeping efforts are also recognized, as a local soldier was lost in Croatia.

In 1990, the monument was completely refurbished by Sanderson Monuments.

In 1928, the North Bay Canadian Legion requested that the name of a short street, Kennedy Avenue, be changed to Memorial Drive. City council passed a resolution to that effect in September of that year. The British Empire Service League obtained permission to plant elm trees along the drive, each with a bronze plaque commemorating a fallen soldier.

In 1918, Canadians turned to the duty of commemorating the dead. Some promoted practical memorials like Roads of Remembrance. These linear tree-lined avenues had trees that were typically a single species, regularly spaced along each side of the avenue that would grow tall and stately. American elms were chosen for many of these avenues. A small plaque was used to assign a particular tree to a specific fallen soldier. In some cases, the next-of-kin was involved in purchasing the tree and/or plaque for the deceased soldier.

Roads of Remembrance were based on two symbol-laden images. The first was France’s tree-lined country avenues: “long straight roads, with large elms on either side, beautiful and useful, and loved by the Canadians overseas.” The second symbol was a living memorial: trees represented the victory of life over death. Memorial trees became living symbols of the sacrifices made in France and Belgium.

Memorial Drive has lost their trees to Dutch elm disease. The street was widened, sidewalks put in and the tree plaques were erected on the Vimy Ridge Memorial Wall.

Erected by the Soldiers' Comfort Club of the Township of Nipissing, this memorial is dedicated to the local war dead of the First World War. During the war years, the women of the area had formed what became known as "The Soldiers Comfort Club" and various "comforts" were sent to the boys overseas. When the war ended, they, and the rest of the community were responsible for erecting this monument.

There are also names engraved of those who died in the Second World War.
