Here on 5 July 1814, an American army under Major-
General Jacob Brown launched the last major invasion of
Canada during the War of 1812. The Americans defeated a
British and Canadian force commanded by Major-General
Phineas Riall consisting of regulars, militia and Aboriginal
warriors. During the engagement, about 200 men were
killed and over 500 wounded. After four months of heavy
fighting, with major action at Lundy's Lane, Fort Erie and
Cooks Mills, the invaders were forced back to the United
States.

The Battle of Chippawa, fought on July 5, 1814, was the opening engagement of the Niagara campaign of 1814, the longest and bloodiest military operation of the War of 1812. The Battle of Chippawa took place on the fields of Samuel Street's farm near the banks of the Niagara River. It began when a British, Canadian and Indigenous force of about 2,000 men, under Major-General Phineas Riall, attacked an invading American army of about 3,500 men under Major-General Jacob Brown. The fighting started early in the morning and lasted until nearly six o'clock in the evening. When it was over, the British were forced to withdraw.

There were two memorials located back to back at Cummington Square. The first memorial was privately erected by Mr. Joseph Carter to honour his son and the other to Chippawa men who lost their lives in the First World War. Originally, the names were carved into the stone. For each of the four men, his regiment, date, and place of death is given. These were the only Chippawa casualties from this war.

Plaques for the Second World War and the Korean War were added to a separate slab at the back of the First World War memorial.

Decades later, a large plaque was erected over the stone with the original carving. The plaque repeats the original wording and adds the names of the Chippawa men who died in the Second World War and the Korean War.  The two memorials are now one.

LAURA SECORD
(1775-1868)
This celebrated heroine of the War of
1812 is a renowned figure in Canadian
History. Determined to warn the British of
an impending attack on Beaver
Dams, Secord set out from her home on
June 22, 1813, on a dangerous mission.
She traveled alone for over 30 kilometres
behind enemy lines, struggling to make
it to the De Cew farmhouse, where
she informed Lieutenant FitzGibbon
about the American plan. Later in
the 19th century, a first generation of
women historians championed Secord's
courageous deed with the goal of
uncovering and popularizing women's
contributions to the history of Canada.

LAURA SECORD
(1775-1868)

Cette célèbre héroïne de la guerre
de 1812 est une figure marquante de
l`histoire du Canada. Déterminée à
prévenir les Britanniques d`un imminent
assaut américain à Beaver Dams, Secord
quitta son foyer, le 22 juin 1813, pour
accomplir une mission périlleuse. Elle
franchit seule plus de 30 kilomètres
derrière les lignes ennemies, parvenant
à grand-peine à la ferme De Cew où elle
informa le lieutenant FitzGibbon des
plans d`attaque américains. Plus tard au
XIXe siècle, une première génération
d`historiennes célébra ce courageux
exploit afin de faire reconnaître l`apport
des femmes à l`épopée canadienne.

Major-General Isaac Brock with 40 men of his majesty's 41st Regiment and 260 of the York, Lincoln, Oxford and Norfolk Militia, set out from Port Dover on 8 August 1812, to relieve the invaded western frontier. His brilliant capture of Hull's army at Detroit with a much smaller force saved this province to the empire and made Brock the hero of Upper Canada. Brock was killed on 13 October 1812 in the Battle of Queenston Heights.

This stone was placed by his royal highness Albert Edward Prince of Wales on 1 September 1860.

Sir Isaac Brock was killed at the Battle of Queenston Heights on October 13, 1812, at the defeat of the invading American forces. Construction of the first monument to Brock began on June 1, 1824. On October 13, 1824, Brock's body was removed from the bastion at Fort George and interred under the monument. Over 8,000 spectators gathered for the procession along the route from Fort George to Queenston. By 1827, the tower was completed and measured 40 metres in height.

On April 17, 1840, the monument was damaged by a bomb set off at the base of the stairs. It was suspected that the charge was detonated by Benjamin Lett, an American sympathiser who was part of the Upper Canada Rebellion. The monument's architect, Francis Hall, insisted that it could be restored. However, many felt that a new tower should be erected to highlight their respect for Brock, and the indignation they felt towards the vandalism.

Construction on the second monument began in 1853. Designed by William Thomas, the monument was built entirely out of Queenston limestone and measured 56 metres in height. It was opened to the public in 1859. The 1853 monument was funded by public subscription from all parts of upper Canadian society.

Brock’s Monument is a Neoclassical design constructed of stone, featuring a 4,8 metre (16 foot) statue of Major General Sir Isaac Brock atop a fluted column. The column rises from an elaborate pedestal anchored on a rusticated square base. Trophies of classical armour stand at the corners of a low enclosing wall and four figures symbolizing victory adorn the column’s capital. An interior stone staircase leads to a viewing deck at the top. A crypt beneath the monument contains the bodies of General Brock and Colonel MacDonnell.

Brock’s Monument is a Classified Federal Heritage Building because of its historical associations, and its architectural and environmental values.

This stone cairn was dedicated in September of 1985 and is located in one of the most historically significant areas of Canada. Nearby, the battles were fought in the War of 1812, and soldiers were trained for the World Wars and every other conflict before that at Butler's Barracks training area. After the Second World War, the area was made into a historical park and the land was donated to the local Legion.

The cairn features a metal plaque with the names of men in the area who sacrificed their lives in the World Wars.

The memorial features three plaques and several adornments, including cannons and is located at the site of the bloodiest battle of the War of 1812 - Lundy’s Lane. On the afternoon of 25 July, 1814, Lieutenant-General Gordon Drummond with about 2,800 men engaged the invading American Army which had recently been victorious at Chippewa. The armies were evenly matched and the six-hour battle lasted until darkness and heavy losses put an end to the fighting. Each force had lost over 800 men. Although each claimed victory, the Americans had failed to dislodge Drummond from his position. They withdrew the next day, ending their offensive in Upper Canada.
