On 15 July 1968, this field was designated Rifles Field to commemorate the service of The Queen's Own Rifles of Canada. Formed 26 April 1860, The Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada is Canada’s oldest continuously serving infantry regiment. Since then, its members have served in every significant conflict in which Canadians have participated.

Currie Barracks was the home station of The Queen's Own Rifles of Canada from 10 June 1946 until 10 December 1958 when Hamilton Gault Barracks in Edmonton was designated the Home Station. In October 1968, the First Battalion returned to Currie Barracks and it was again designated the home station of the Regiment. In addition to the First Battalion, Regimental Headquarters, the Regimental Museum, and Regimental Band were accommodated within Currie Barracks.
