THE MEMORIAL HONOR ROLL

OF THE 104 OFFICERS & MEN OF THE CITY OF PRINCE ALBERT WHO FELL IN THE "SECOND WORLD WAR"

They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old age shall not weary them nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them

Re-Dedication

Are we worthy of them, O Lord
who have died through the weary years
who did not yield
on a shell-torn field
has their sacrifice died with our tears?

Are we worthy of them, O Lord
who met death in the burning sky
they were young and strong
they have sung their song
must its echos fade and die
are we worthy of them, O Lord
who have died on the wind-swept seas
in their sunken craft
on a broken raft
oh Lord are we worthy of these?

They were eager for Life and Love
death has withered them, root and stem
let us pray, O Lord
on broken sword
let us pray to be worthy of them

Melfort Cenotaph was erected by the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 30 and dedicated on 4 August 1929. Colonel F.B. Ware, DSO performed the ceremony on behalf of General J.M. Ross, VC who was unable to attend. Chairman of the Memorial Committee, E. D. Carwardine, read the names of fallen First World War soldiers. Two Books of Remembrance listing the fallen from the First World War were added shortly after the dedication.

The cenotaph was located in Memorial Park on the corner of Broadway Street N, Burrows Avenue and MacLeod Avenue until 1958. It was then moved in front of Memorial Hall at the Melfort Civic Centre where it remained until November 5, 1996. It's third location was in Veteran's Park on the corner of Bemister Avenue E and Assiniboia Street until 3 October 2006. The cenotaph was then moved to its current location on Main Street when it was completely refurbished and rededicated.

After the Second World War, two Books of Remembrance were added listing the fallen from that war. One name from the Korean War was added after that war ended.

The cenotaph weighs approximately 29,000 pounds, including the four granite Books of Remembrance. The names of the fallen on the Books and the inscription on the 12 feet pillar were hand-cut with gold leaf lead-filled letters. Melfort Cenotaph commemorates all service personnel of all conflicts including Merchant Marines, Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and people that worked to supply and support the war effort.

THE REGINA RIFLE REGIMENT

The Regina Rifle Regiment originated in Regina on 3 July 1905 as an infantry unit originally designated
the 95th Regiment. During the First World War it served as the 28th Battalion Canadian Expeditionary
Force, part of the 2nd Canadian Infantry Division, with 933 lives lost and 18 Battle Honours awarded.

Known as the Regina Rifles Regiment when the Second World War began, the full Regiment was mobilized
for active service on 24 May 1940. It embarked for Britain in August 1941 and saw action in Europe with
the 7th Infantry Brigade of the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division. On D-Day, 6 June 1944, the Regina Rifles
landed among the first wave and advanced inland, securing all its objectives for the initial assault.
As part of the 1st Canadian Army the Regiment fought through Normandy, then along the Channel
ports into Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. Some of their most bitter fighting was in
the Battle of the Scheldt, fighting through flooded land against a determined foe, and helping to
take part in the liberation of the Netherlands and was in action in Germany when the war
in Europe ended. The unit was awarded 30 Battle Honours for its service.
The Regiment exists today as They Royal Regina Rifles.

A total of 453 members of the Regiment lost their lives in the Second World War
and lie buried in Commonwealth War Grave Cemeteries in Europe.
