A brass plaque in honour of Broadway Methodist Tabernacle parishioners who gave their lives in the First World War was unveiled on February 10, 1918. The merger of churches that created the United Church of Canada in 1924 led to the eventual closing of the Tabernacle. The building at 270 College Street was demolished by 1930.

The plaque was transferred to College Street United Church and unveiled on May 5, 1929. It was set beside the plaque to the memory of the men from College Street Presbyterian Church who served in the First World War. In symbol of the union of the two congregations, wreaths were placed below each plaque by a member of the other church. Corporal C.C. Querrie, who went from Broadway Tabernacle to the war, honored the memory of the men of College Street Presbyterian Church. Milton Torrance, Petty Officer, Royal Naval Reserve, a member of the congregation of College Street Presbyterian Church, laid his wreath below the Broadway Tabernacle plaque. Reverend S.D. Chown, DD, LLD, who 30 years prior was the minister of Broadway Tabernacle, unveiled the newly placed plaque.

During the First World War, 162 young men of First Avenue Baptist Church at 77 First Avenue left for overseas. This period was one of loneliness and anxiety, of knitting and sending parcels, of heroism and tragedy of prison camps, of the wounded, and of 23 young lives given in the cause of freedom. A memorial hall in honour of parishioners who served and those who gave their lives in the First World War was dedicated by Reverend Dr. W.T. Graham on February 4, 1923.
