The Memorial Cairn and Stewart Square were created by Lieutenant Colonel B.W.E. Lee in honour of Lieutenant Colonel James Reginald Stewart, MBE, CD, Provost Marshal (Army), April 1946 to July 1954. It was officially dedicated on 13 June 1965.

The original cairn was created using flag stones and sat on a solid cement base. At some point in its history the cairn was rebuilt due to old age/damage, using new flagstones. Four Golden painted lions were added at the four corners of the base and a copper cap placed at the top of the cairn.

It was primarily a memorial to the Canadian Provost Corps, ultimately extending to the Canadian Intelligence Corps, Royal Canadian Air Force Security Services and Canadian Forces Security and Intelligence branches, commemorated by plaques affixed to the sides of the cairn.

The memorial was previously located in Worthington Park on Ram Street, Canadian Forces Base Borden, before it was moved to its current location in 2015.

Supreme Sacrifice

Murals inspired by stories and photos from local sources are combined with historical images to honour the men and women who made the supreme sacrifice.

Poppies painted by artist and community members are in remembrance of loved ones and Canadian lives lost - 158 in Afghanistan, 116 in UN peacekeeping missions, 516 in the Korean War, and over 100,000 in World Wars I and II combined.

Greg and Sue Hindle first started working on the Alliston War Mural in 2015. They painted images commemorating Canadian’s contributions in Afghanistan. The artists used photos taken by Afghanistan Veterans to complete the images. In 2016, a second mural was added to honour UN troops and it depicts United Nation’s soldiers, an observation tower, a helicopter and a light-armoured vehicle.

The last two murals at the Alliston Memorial Arena were unveiled during the Remembrance Day service on November 11, 2017. The First and Second World Wars panel shows Sir Frederick Banting's parents standing outside the homestead as they see their son off to war, and another scene was inspired by a photo of new recruits marching through Alliston. It also includes the Canadian National Vimy Memorial, soldiers in trenches and biplanes.

In the half dedicated to the Second World War, troops are seen landing at Juno Beach, while the Korean War mural highlights missions carried out by soldiers, including those of Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry Regiment.

The completed murals had poppies painted along the bottom to match the number of Canadians that died in each conflict.

Dedicated on 15 May 1994 by the Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Branch, this memorial is dedicated to the members of the former Corps of Royal Canadian Electrical Mechanical Engineers (RCEME) and the men and women who currently serve quietly to keep the fighting troops in good running order, the Electrical and Mechanic Engineers.  These Craftsmen are represented by the Weapons Techs, Vehicle Techs, Material Techs and Fire Control Systems Techs.  Vital links in the organization, but they don't get the glory of the front line troops. The memorial was dedicated to commemorate the 50 years of service that RCEME has provided.

CAMP BORDEN

Camp Borden was established during the First World War
as a major training centre of Canadian Expeditionary Force
battalions. The Camp (including this structure) was off-
icially opened by Sir Sam Hughes, Minister of Militia and
Defence, on July 11, 1916, after two months of intensive build-
ing. This military reserve, comprising over twenty square
miles, was soon occupied by some 32,000 troops. Training
facilities were expanded in 1917 with the institution of an
air training programme under the Royal Flying Corps, Canada,
and the construction of the first Canadian military aero-
drome, regarded as the finest military aviation camp in North
America. Following the armistice Camp Borden continued as
an important army and air force centre and became one of the
largest armed forces bases in Canada.

C INT C/CS of MI

This cairn commemorates the Canadian Intelligence Corps (C INT C) and the Canadian School of Military Intelligence (CS of MI). The C INT C was established on 29 October 1942. The Army established the CS of MI on this site in 1952 where it was affectionately known as the "College of Knowledge". Army Military Intelligence training took place here until 1967, when the C INT C was reduced to nil strength, and the CS of MI was disbanded and merged into the Canadian Forces School of Intelligence and Security (CFSIS). Tri-service Military Intelligence training for the unified Canadian Forces continued at CFSIS until 1999 when the Canadian Forces School of Military Intelligence (CFSMI) was formed. CFSMI was moved to CFB Kingston in 2000.
