Interviewer: Today you probably have a lot of emotions as you head to the Netherlands in celebration of the 70th Anniversary. Tell us how you feel? Edwin Arsenault: Well I feel good in a way. It brings back a lot of memories. That’s where I was when the war ended. Interviewer: So at the end of the war you were in Holland? Edwin Arsenault: Holland. Yes. I remember an officer told us one morning “If you see any Germans don’t fire. And don’t worry you got the same rules.” So we were dug in and the end of the field the Germans were at the other end of it. So we got out of our holes and start walking. The Germans did the same. We were waving at each other. Interviewer: Tell us what Interviewer: Tell us what it’s like for yourself to have this experience. Jim Warford: Oh that’s hard to put into words. We went to France last year and the feeling there was, you know, going back to that it brought back so many memories and that’s what’s gonna happen in Holland because I spent a lot of time in Holland. Interviewer: He was one of those soldiers who didn’t get to come home. John Preece: No. Interviewer: And if you have the strength to share with us the feelings you have. You’re gonna be there. John Preece: Well I feel that it’s melancholy in that I don’t’ feel good about his having such a wonderful man to do what he did. To give me his only shovel and why did he look upon me. I was a young guy obviously he thought he was doing me a big favour, you know. Where did that kindness. When you talk about humanity sometimes, we talk about the bad thing. Where did that come from? Reichswald Forest War Cemetery
On May 8, 2015, members of the Government of Canada delegation participated in a commemorative ceremony at the Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, the largest Commonwealth burial ground in Germany. It was created after the Second World War, when honoured war dead were brought in from battlegrounds all over western Germany. It serves as a lasting reminder of the fierce fighting that took place in the Rhineland during the last months of the war.
Visit to Kamp Westerbork / Flower-laying ceremony at National Westerbork Memorial
As part of the 70th anniversary of the Liberation of the Netherlands, Canadian Veterans visit Kamp Westerbork for a private flower-laying ceremony at the National Westerbork Cemetery. Kamp Westerbork, located approximately 15 kilometres outside of the village of Westerbork, Netherlands, was the site of a large transit and work camp where more than 100,000 Jews, gypsies and resistance members were taken during the Second World War. On April 12, 1945, Kamp Westerbork was liberated and 876 prisoners freed when the Canadian Army came upon the camp.
Remembrance Ceremony at the Holten Canadian War Cemetery
Canadian Veterans and students attend a commemorative ceremony at the Holten Canadian War Cemetery, where some 1,350 Canadians are buried. The ceremony is an annual tradition organized by the Welcome Again Veterans Foundation.

70th Anniversary of The Liberation of the Netherlands
Veteran Affairs Canada invited regimental, air force and naval associations that participated in the Liberation of the Netherlands to be part of the official Government of Canada delegation. In May 2015, selected Canadian Veterans of the Second World War travelled from Canada to the Netherlands as members of the delegation for the 70th anniversary of the Liberation of the Netherlands to participate in commemorative ceremonies. These are some sights and sounds of that trip.
Liberation Parade
Canadian Veterans of the Liberation of the Netherlands, participate in the Liberation March Past in Wageningen. Set in the Dutch town where the 25th German Army officially surrendered, the celebratory parade this year marks the 70th anniversary of that historic moment.
