Short Deployment to Somalia
Heroes Remember
So after Cyprus I was posted right away to the
Airborne Regiment and then we found ourselves
deployed right away to Somalia. I didn’t go on
the initial deployment, I went afterwards.
I was only there for a few months but
when I got there everything had already been
set up and kind of the culture shock that had
happened when everyone got on the ground was
kind of over with because it wasn’t the shock.
So when I got there everything was already
set up and compounds were done and fenced
and everything so I just kind of went in and it was
almost like being in the Cyprus compound again.
The barbed wire was up, the OP’s were set
and that so just the daily routine was very
similar to what was going on in Cyprus;
observation posts or working the front gate or
going to get supplies or whatever so it was
very much the same. And then I found myself
back in Canada on a course so a few of us left
and we started a course back home so I wasn’t
really there that long to experience really the
full culture shock of everything.
Like I said things were set up when I got
there so. We did do, we had some helicopters
and we did do some jumps. Just training jumps
as we were in the Airborne that’s one thing
that we enjoyed to do so we found a spot,
they set up a drop zone and we did
a few jumps. And they had some volleyball
tournaments and stuff to keep the morale up
and we ended up putting in showers and stuff
for us and keeping, you know, stuff
like we have at home. Other than that it was
really a very short deployment for me.
