I mean I felt I should do something to let him know so he didn't
speak to me again, we just kept. I thought he was going to have
a heart attack you know. I mean the Germans were so mad that
they wouldn't believe that he didn't know that I was; if they
ever found out I was a Canadian airman. I didn't do it in... so
that the German who was walking back and forth would know about
it so anyways he, so about I guess it was about 11 o'clock we
stopped and then he then they said, then they said ‘line up'.
So they lined up, lined us all up. Oh I was scared to death.
I was, I don't know, I guess I was scared that they were gonna
find out who I was and they were gonna shoot the whole 40. That
was my initial feeling. However as far as I'm, well it was just
fate, you see. Anyways they pulled out the two that they had
beaten up the night before and they just shot them in front of
us, lined them, put them out on the field and shot them in front
of us. The bodies just fell into the graves there and then they
turned to us and said, "You can go, you're free to go."
Description
Mr. Gouinlock describes how the Germans shot 2 of the hostages right in front of them.
Jack Gouinlock
Mr. Gouinlock was serving as a navigator with the Canadian Air Force when the plane he was in was shot down over Holland. He ended up spending about two months in Belgium, hiding from the Germans, staying with different people and moving around within Belgium. He was eventually taken prisoner by the Germans but was let go the next day as they did not know he was a Canadian soldier. Two Belgians that had been captured with him were not so lucky as they were shot right in front of the rest of the prisoners.
