Well, she was working in education, and she was getting her PhD in education, and I was too. And actually it was my supervisor that introduced me to her because we were having, both of us were having a difficult time on the thesis, and so we'd get together and she'd tell me all her troubles. But then she was doing oral history with this former first dean of the faculty of nursing there. But it was after I came home, and you know it's university you're expected to do research, and I was also going to the nursing sisters meetings, and I thought my goodness I think I should do oral history. And, this was back in the seventies, and so I got going on oral history with the nursing sisters, and we had about forty of the World War I nurses in the association, now they were getting old, you know they were 80, 90. But we managed to get that little group together, and committee, and we set up the plans for oral history with the World War I people and some of them were in Sunnybrook hospital. So we got all these interviews with these World War I people and it was fascinating to me. At the same time I was teaching.

Margaret Allemang

Margaret Allemang was born July 19th, 1914 in Toronto, Ontario. Inspired by a childhood sickness, Ms. Allemang went into nursing in 1937. She trained at the University of Toronto, and when war arose she joined as it was "the thing to do". During her time of service, Ms. Allemang did not go overseas but was posted in several locations across Canada. After the war, Ms. Allemang collected oral histories from other nursing sisters as part of her thesis studies while pursuing her PhD in Education.
