And, at one point there, with the chap on watch with me, we went up one deck cause we were right under the bridge, and we had shelter but we, we were watching what was going on, I can still see the, like tracers going out of the Duke of York and landing on the, the Sharnhorst, and you could see the flashes of their guns as they came back. And they were concentrating on the Duke, not on us although there were a few near misses and I, we did get I did get wet from one near miss, that was about the only thing. But when that happened, there was no fear involved, you know, you're just, just curious. After that near miss, we decided we better go down our, to one deck and underneath, but then it became, because we started firing and our guns were right outside and they were blasting on the, right outside and they were, the deadheads on the scuttles were, were, were showing the effects. Anyway we, I guess we stayed there and, but later on, it wasn't too long, because this started about five-ish and it went on for a couple of hours altogether. We gradually got, they slowed the Sharnhorst down with something or other, and the other cruisers were on the other side, and we, we closed eventually and Sharnhorst gradually was being massacred, you know, their guns were being put out. And I know I don't know the full story but we did go on, all, we were being kept informed onboard by the first lieutenant with, with broadcasts of what was going on so we, we had an, we had an idea of what was going on.

Mr. Treherne discusses how the convoy gradually takes over the Sharnhorst

Thomas Claude Treherne

Mr. Treherne returned to Canada after the war and continued his military career as a senior instructor at Naden Supply School. Mr. Treherne maintains a family history of his father's and grandfather's service lives. He is currently writing his memoirs of his navy service in the supply branch, and also serves as a member of the Council for Canadian Security in the 21st Century (CCS 21).
