Today’s Sunrise Flag Raising Ceremony pays tribute to the women of war who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom from the First World War to present day. Field of Crosses honours nine remarkable women for their service and sacrifice throughout Canada’s military history including one fallen in the First World War, seven fallen in the Second World War and one fallen in Afghanistan. This morning, we also honour Michele Lang, a Calgary Herald Journalist who lost her life while on assignment in Afghanistan in December of 2009. Four Canadian military personnel also lost their lives that day when the military vehicle their group was traveling in was struck by a roadside bomb. Lang's sacrifice and dedication to journalism are remembered and honoured today, serving as a reminder of the risks journalists undertake to bring important stories to the public.

Participants and invited guests:

School Choirs to participate in the sunrise ceremonies to sing the National and Royal Anthems. Buglers, mostly cadets and young adults, to play the Last Post. Pipers, mostly cadets, and also volunteer pipers from the piping community, to play the Lament after a minute of silence. Veterans, cadets, girl guides, boy scouts are a part of the sunrise ceremony in the raising of the flags. Uniformed members of the community, such as Calgary Fire Department, Calgary Police Services, EMS Alberta Sheriffs and Military Members, will participate. Other guests include Civic, Provincial, Federal Government officials, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, Governor General of Canada, Consul Generals. Veterans, community leaders and members of the public.

After the ceremony, members of the public are welcome to walk amongst the crosses all day long.
