2005 Remembrance Day Poster - Remember

The Government of Canada has declared 2005 the Year of the Veteran. Throughout the year, Canadians have committed to celebrate honour, thank and remember our Veterans, and also to teach our youth about their contributions and sacrifices.

The Remember poster marks the 60^th anniversary of V-J Day and is the fourth in a series of five posters commemorating 2005 as the Year of the Veteran. The central image emphasizes that 60 years later, the lives of those who fought in the Far East theatre are continuing to be honoured and remembered. It features the Sai Wan Bay War Cemetery in Hong Kong. Here, 283 soldiers of the Canadian Army are buried, including 107 who are unidentified.

60^th anniversary of the end of the war in the Far East, V-J Day

Canadian Forces were involved in the war in the Far East - one of the longest campaigns of the Second World War - from its outset. By the time the war was over, Canada’s involvement in the Far East numbered more than 10,000 serving on land, at sea, and in the air. The battle in the Far East presented harrowing challenges to those who served, many of whom gave their lives and must be remembered. As Canadians we owe a great debt to the Veterans of Burma, Hong Kong, other Far East theatres, as well as the Navy and Merchant Navy.

As we mark the 60^th anniversary of Victory in the Far East during the Year of the Veteran and in the years to come, we will remember the accomplishments and sacrifices of all Canadians who served. There is an obligation to make sure the memory of our Veterans is not washed away by the tides of time.
