Baptized Joseph-Jean Lapointe but had the first name "Oliva" since at least 1900. Son of Jean Lapointe and Laura Nobert, of Shawinigan, Mauricie, Québec. At the time of his enlistment he had declared that he was born in Sherbrooke on September 12th, 1896, and he had named his uncle Joseph, of Sherbooke, as his next of kin.
In his record his family connections are confused and poorly identified.

Courcelette is a village about 8 kilometres north-east of Albert (next to the main road D929 Albert-Bapaume). The REGINA TRENCH CEMETERY lies about 1.5 kilometres north-west of the village. The REGINA TRENCH CEMETERY (signposted in the centre of Courcelette) is 1.5 kilometres down a single track lane (suitable for cars).
