Nicosia, capital of undivided Cyprus, is the principal town of the Greek Section of the island, but adjoins Turkish territory. The border between the two communities is known as the buffer zone" and the "green line", protected by UNFICYP (United National Forces in Cyprus). The NICOSIA WAR CEMETERY for the 1939-45 War contains 218 burials and Wayne's Keep contains service graves post 1947. Access to the cemeteries is difficult as they are in the "buffer zone" and it is not recommended from the Turkish side. The cemeteries are 4 kilometres west of Nicosia on the Myrtou Road. Visitors require permission to enter the cemeteries and at least 5 days notice must be given. A United Nations escort is necessary and photography is restricted (discreet photographs of headstones only). Visits are permitted between 09.00 and 12.00 Monday to Friday.
