Son of Augustus and Daisy Penney, of Humbermouth, Corner Brook, Newfoundland. Brother of Phyllis, Fannie, Norma and Kevin.
Gunner Penney received his elementary education at United Corner Brook East Church School and his high school education at Corner Brook Public School. He graduated from High School in 1941 at the age of 15. After graduating, he was employed with the Bowater Pulp and Paper Company, Corner Brook, Newfoundland. He entered a four year machinist apprenticeship program on completion of high school.
In 1944 during his apprenticeship, he took leave and joined the Royal Canadian Artillery in Halifax, Nova Scotia. In December 1945 while having a routine medical examination, a brain tumor was detected. The radiation treatment was unsuccessful and in January 1946, he returned to Corner Brook and immediately returned to his apprenticeship program which he completed prior to his death.
