Son of Joseph-Télesphore Grenier and Marie Bolduc, of Dunbar, Wisconsin. He and his two sisters became orphan at a young age and were cared for by their maternal grandfather. This family moved to Canada in 1900 and the grand-father died in 1912. When he enlisted, he named his sister Gladys-Thérèse Grenier as next-of-kin; she married Pierre Ducasse (alias Coss) five months later.

Wancourt is a village about 8 kilometres south-east of Arras. It is 2 kilometres south of the main road from Arras to Cambrai. The WANCOURT BRITISH CEMETERY is a short distance south-east of the village just off the D 35 road.
