Baptized Joseph-François-Omer Blanchet. Son of Elzéar Blanchet (deceased in 1898) and Florentine Caron (deceased in 1908), of Cap St-Ignace. He stated being born on 21 July when he enlisted. He named his brother Raoul, of Québec, as next of kin.

Transferred from the 10th Reserve Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force to the 22nd Battalion on 15 October 1917, he arrived in France on the 19th and went to the front line on 24 November. On 27 February 1918, volunteering to lead a raid into enemy territory, he returned to the trenches at Lens, Pas-de-Calais, France, having successfully completed his mission. Noticing that two soldiers from the group were missing, he went back to find them and bring them back wounded, for which he was awarded the Military Medal. He was killed in action on 30 March 1918 east of Boisleux-Saint-Marc, at Mercatel, near Arras, Pas-de-Calais.
