Location:

Maple Copse Cemetery is located 5 Km south east of Ieper town centre, a road leading from the Meenseweg (N8), connecting Ieper to Menen. From Ieper town centre the Meenseweg is located via Torhoutstraat and right onto Basculestraat. Basculestraat ends at a main cross roads, directly over which begins the Meenseweg. 2.5 Km along the Meenseweg shortly after the Birr Cross Roads Cemetery, lies the right hand turning onto Wulvestraat. About 1 Km along the Wulvestraat is the left hand turning onto Schachteweidestraat. The cemetery itself is located 2 Km along the Schachteweidestraat on the right hand side of the road.

  • Diary– The entry in the War Diary of the 43rd Canadian Infantry Battalion for June 10, 1916, states: Casualties. 4 killed, 29 wounded. (killed includes Lieut. F.J. Watson). In addition to Lieutenant FREDERICK JOHNSTON WATSON (who was buried at ZILLEBEKE CHURCHYARD, Belgium), the three other members of the 43rd Canadian Infantry Battalion were Private JOHN HERKLESS WELLWOOD (Service Number: 153095), Sergeant JAMES THOMSON (Service Number: 420799), Lance Corporal ALBERT EDWARD HALL (Service Number: 420945) (all buried at MAPLE COPSE CEMETERY, Belgium). Company Sergeant Major WILLIAM GIBSON LAIRD (Service Number: 420864) of the 43rd Canadian Infantry Battalion who is commemorated at MENIN GATE (YPRES) MEMORIAL is also reported to have died on June 10, 1916. Presumably at the time the Diary entry was made, his status was ¿missing¿. The fact that his name is inscribed at MENIN GATE (YPRES) MEMORIAL, suggests that his remains were never found.
