Born in Woodstock, Ontario 2 February 1893. Son of T.L. and Annie Sproule, London, Ontario, Canada. Brother of Lillian Sproule of London, Ontario. He enlisted at St. Thomas, Ontario on 1 October 1915. He stated he was single and he was an electrician. He had former service with the 7th Fusliers.

Etaples is a town about 27 kilometres south of Boulogne. The Etaples Military Cemetery is to the north of the town, on the west side of the road to Boulogne.
