He had declared that he was born in Rimouski, Québec, at the time of his enrolment, but he does not appear in any register of the province and these are recognized as being among the best in the world. Furthermore, he named an "Alberta Laurin" as his sister at the Ursuline Convent in Québec City and she could not be traced after his death.
Perhaps it was in his interest to cover his tracks? A document from the Canadian Customs suggests this possibility. A year before his enlistment he had been turned back at the border as an undesirable, with only one dollar in his pocket, and the document also indicates that he was a native-born American citizen.

Take the D38 from Cherisy to Hendecourt. Approximately 2 kilometres from Cherisy turn left just before Sun Quarry Cemetery onto a dirt track. Continue for 1 kilometre before turning left to arrive at Quebec Cemetery.
