Convoy HX-72 left Halifax, Nova Scotia, on 9 September 1940 and headed for the Clyde, England. The 47 ships dispersed on the 21st due to bad weather. On the 22nd, at 1:52 AM, the Frederick S. Fales was hit on the port side by two torpedoes launched from U-100 and sank by the stern in five minutes at about 340 miles (547 km) west of Bloody Foreland, Ireland, position 55°30'N/13°40'W. The captain, 19 sailors and one gunner lost their lives.
