On 17 March 1943, between 03:37 and 03:41 am, U-91 fires five torpedoes into convoy HX-229 400 miles (644 km) east-southeast of Cape Farewell, Greenland. The SS Harry Luckenbach is hit on the starboard side amidships and sinks in three minutes, position 50°38'N/34°46'W. Of the crew, 80 sailors lost their lives while 9 officers, 45 crew and 26 defenders were rescued by the British corvette HMS Pennywort (K111).
