I think it is very important on both sides of the Atlantic that young people remember what took place here in Europe and France one century ago. We do it here in Douai, even though war took place here in this very city, many young people forget and we work on that every year.

It’s definitely a brand new experience and an amazing opportunity to gather all the youth from around the world especially Canada and France and then discover new perspectives and visions on the First World War and all the violence that has taken place beforehand but also how we have come together through unity and then come together to go through that tough time as allies and helped each other out. And to meet each other and to just talk about the war and us and introducing our self, that’s been an amazing experience.

I live there so every day I see the traces and the tracks of the First World War in France whether it be through a cemetery, a monument, a museum; the educational programming that our association tries to put through and to create with young people and I wouldn’t be doing that if it hadn’t marked me. I think that when you live in a place like this, you get a greater consciousness of what it was actually like and I feel it’s my duty as a Canadian to actually do as much as I can to perpetuate that memory. So yes I am very proud but I also feel a great responsibility.
