Navy Life was Good

Heroes Remember

Transcript
I loved sailing though. I never got seasick. I loved the power of the ocean. I loved being at sea. The stormier it was the better. I just found it very, very cool. Like I said just the power of the ocean. It was amazing some of the stuff we did. And the navy was a good fit for me because we did lots of travelling. In my previous jobs, I was at recruiting standalone units where you don’t do a lot of travelling. With the navy, you go to a lot of places and you see a lot of the world that way. We would be out at sea too and then we would get tasked, you know, there would be a boat that was in peril out there that they were sinking so we’d if we were in the area we would get there. We did a couple of drug smuggling operations with the RCMP so it kind of made me feel that I was, that’s what I signed up to do, was to be part of a team and to help people. So I certainly felt that when I was with the navy.

Ms. Bate expresses her positivity and the satisfaction she felt in being part of the navy.

Sandy Bate

Ms. Sandy Bate was born July 11, 1960 in Chatham, New Brunswick. Prior to joining the military, she was employed with DND for ten years. At the age of 28 she chose to join the military and with her clerical skills and sports background saw fit to join the air force. Throughout Ms. Bate’s career she had several postings across Canada and because of family connection in Comox, BC made a big decision to switch over to the navy as junior clerk and become part of the crew of the HMCS Huron. Eventually, due to declining health, Ms. Bate was medically discharged in 2009. Being part of the Invictus Games 2017 has been instrumental in providing a positive outlook to her retired life. She represented Canada as part of the Team Canada Golf team, an initiative she is most proud of. Ms. Bate now resides in Victoria, BC with her family.
