FEMALE SPEAKER (Vimy Memorial Tour Guide): Another main way of communicating during an assault is actually through messengers or runners.
So these are men who actually volunteer for this position, and the reason why we’re using volunteers is because it’s so, so dangerous.
And these are men who would actually run through the system of trenches on the surface as well as the network of underground subways to deliver messages from one location to another.
Now, in order to make sure that they always have priority among the soldiers, they are actually wearing an armband to distinguish themselves as messengers.
They would have exited a room just like this one, gotten their message from the officer, run up a very steep exit point,
and run through this network of trenches to deliver that message.
Now the average life expectancy for a messenger during an assault is one to two weeks, but it is a very, very important part of an attack.
