Mice, Rats and Snakes

Mice and rats, that was the big item and they were with you in the bunker pretty well all the time. Snakes, first went there they showed us poisonous snakes in a bottle. They were about that big, deadly poisonous, and we were always concerned, of course. So we were issued boots, high boots that were, you know that sort of prevented this. I have a picture, I had lot of pictures of Korea and I have one of my buddy holding a snake. Of course we didn’t see too much during the day but at night, this snake he was holding it up like that. It was that long and he had shot it with a pistol, a 45, and you know when you think about living in those conditions and those things around it was, you know. Mosquitos, of course, no end to mosquitos. My mother had sent me a mosquito net which I was able to put over my bed which kept out the mosquitos and the mice because the mice would be crawling around the sandbags around. So that’s yeah, that mosquito net was one of the best gifts I guess I got from my family.

Cy Carney

Mr. Cy Carney was born in Fredericton, New Brunswick. He grew up in a coal mining town where his father worked in the coal mine. Coal mining not being a career Mr. Carney would settle for, he decided to join the Army. In 1950, Mr. Carney joined the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals as a signalman. Mr. Carney’s initial thought was to join for three years, but his military career spanned 29 years. After the Korean War, Mr. Carney served in other missions with the Canadian Forces to include two years in Yukon, three years in Europe under NATO as a machinist, and in 1969 he was posted to Cyprus under the Black Watch as an electrician for a six month tour. After retiring from the military, Mr. Carney was employed at the Owen Plant in Grand Lake for 17 years. Mr. Carney married and had five children.
