And I was with the 1st, and George, when I say George that's my chum, he was in the 2nd. George was going to go, go to France and going do all kinds of things. Well, I was going to do all kinds of things too. About a week after we went in there this time, I had a letter from his sister. George was killed. He was killed and that's all there is to it. Yeah, poor George, he was the best friend I ever had and he's in Flanders Fields now.

Mr. Lapenskie painfully describes hearing of the loss of his best friend in a letter from home.

Peter Lapenskie

Peter Lapenskie was born on January 31, 1896 in Rockingham, Ontario. His first wartime role was as an interpreter to Polish nationals being held at an internment camp at Kapuskasing, Ontario. Mr. Lapenskie then enlisted in Montreal, went overseas and served in France with the 1st Battalion in the Royal Montreal Regiment, attaining the rank of Sergeant. Mr. Lapenskie was wounded, recovered and served in the Army of Occupation in Cologne, Germany.
