The Morewood Cenotaph Committee honored their fallen on the 100th anniversary of the original unveiling of the cenotaph - July 6, 2021, by installing 21 mini-monuments - ten along each side - one for each of those who had given their lives, and one by itself at the back representing all who returned. A portrait of Emmerson Swerdfeger is etched into his memorial. Emmerson était assistant dans une écurie avant la guerre. Un document médical daté du 28 novembre 1916 indique que l’armée le considérait comme étant mineur. Il a quitté Halifax sur le SS Mauretania le 25 octobre 1916 et est arrivé en Angleterre le 31 octobre. Le capitaine Glasgow a agi à titre de témoin lorsqu’il a signé son testament. Emmerson a été blessé au bras gauche par des éclats d’obus le 6 avril 1918. Il a été hospitalisé pour des éclats d’obus et pour la gale du 9 au 20 avril 1918, et a été déclaré mort au combat le 8 août 1918.
Une lettre envoyée à ses parents a été publiée dans le Chesterville Record :
« Un jeune homme avec qui il avait suivi sa formation en Angleterre et en France n’était qu’à deux pieds de lui lorsqu’il est tombé. Ce camarade a été gravement blessé au même moment. »
La famille a déclaré : « Si Emerson avait vécu deux jours de plus, il aurait eu 19 ans », ce qui a permis de déterminer sa véritable date de naissance.
The 20 pillars representing individual soldiers are in alphabetic order. The 21st pillar sits in the shadow of the cenotaph and between the two rows. A shadow stone, not only because of where it is physically located, but also because of where it resides in our thoughts on Remembrance Day and recognition of their sacrifice. They survived the battlefield to return home changed, wounded, damaged in visible and invisible ways and they would eventually succumb to these wounds. They sacrificed their lives just as much as those who fell alongside them on the battlefield, it just took longer.
This single pillar represents so many Canadians whose sacrifices aren’t recorded in the Books of Remembrance and only appear in the shadows of our thoughts when attending Remembrance Day ceremonies.
