The Korean Veterans War Memorial was unveiled May 30, 2009, in recognition of the sacrifices of Canadian soldiers in the Korean war. It was installed by Hallmark Memorial Co. The granite and bronze monument contains the names of all 516 Canadians killed in the Korean War with the names of the Windsor-Essex casualties specially noted.
It's the result of three years of work by a committee that included Henry Martinak of Windsor who served in Korea with the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry from 1950 to 1952. Monument to Canadian Fallen, a Korean War memorial, was shipped from Korea to the Windsor Armory, where it was assembled by artist Yu Young Mun. It was temporarily sited in the park adjacent to Windsor City Hall for several months before its intended destination in Ottawa was ready in 2003. After its departure, Martinka felt Windsor should have its own Korean War memorial.
Essex County Korean War Veterans Memorial Committee raised about $47,000 for the project and received funding from the Trillium Foundation, Veterans Affairs Canada and Ceasars Windsor to cover the total cost of $63,000.
