Le caporal suppléant Roger Joseph « Sonny » Firman s’est enrôlé en 1940 et a servi dans le Royal Winnipeg Rifles. Il a participé au débarquement de Normandie le 6 juin 1944, a été fait prisonnier de guerre et exécuté près de Caen comme prisonnier de guerre non armé le 8 juin 1944 par la 12e Division des SS (Jeunesse hitlérienne). Il avait 21 ans à son décès.

Pour souligner le 63e anniversaire de la mort de Firman, une plaque a été dévoilée à la caserne de pompiers no 25 de Transcona par son camarade et ami Paul Martin le 8 juin 2007. L’emplacement de la caserne de pompiers était autrefois la maison d’enfance de Firman à Transcona.

Cpl. Roger J. Firman, age 21,
was killed by Nazi troops of
the 12th SS Hitler Youth Division on 8 June 1944
while being held as a prisoner of war in Normandy.

Over 150 Canadian soldiers fell victim to this war
crime when the SS systematically shot unarmed
prisoners following the D-Day invasion of France.

Before going to war, Roger grew up in a
family home located on this very site.
