This Honour Roll commemorates the courage and service of young men
and women of the Jewish Community of Timmins who volunteered
in the Canadian Armed Forces during the Second World War.

They, like their parents and grandparents took great pride in this country
and appreciated the opportunity to establish their own roots in Canada.

The first Jewish settlers to Northern Ontario arrived at the beginning
of the 20th Century. By 1917, Jewish railway workers, farmers, retailers,
and professionals had settles in Timmins, and by the early 30's they built
a vibrant community of over 100 families, a new synagogue - B'nai Israel
Congregation with a full-time rabbi and teachers for the children.

A very active B'mai Brith Lodge, Hadassah Chapter and a Young Judea were
formed, contributing to a vital social and philanthrophic environment.

The generous contributions of B'nai Israel Congregation
of Timmins enables the Sunnybrook and Women's
Jewish Chapel to continue to provide
spiritual sustenance to Jewish Veterans
as well as staff, patients and visitors.
