The HMCS VENTURE (1954-1968) Legacy Cairn was installed on 28 August 2024 by the VENTURE (1954—1968) Legacy Committee in the Admiralty Garden at the Halifax Naval Museum. It was dedicated on 14 September 2024.
The cairn was designed by CDR Matt Durnford Royal Canadian Navy, Retired, VENTURE Class of 1965, with input from the VENTURE Legacy Committee and DeMone Monuments of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. It is constructed of granite representing strength and the coastal environment. The shape and size is reminiscent of historical monuments commemorating momentous occasions , events and individuals. The shape was designed to accommodate the crest of HMCS VENTURE at the top with a short inscription (in both official languages) recognizing the contribution of the Naval Officers who graduated from HMCS VENTURE during the period between 1954 and 1968.
The inscription on the base elaborates on the main inscription on the cairn. The initials “BZ”: BRAVO ZULU is the combination of the BRAVO and ZULU nautical signal flags, is a Naval signal, typically conveyed by flag hoist or voice radio, meaning “WELL DONE” with regard to actions, operations or performance.
