FORT HENRY

The first Fort Henry was built during the War of 1812 to
protect the British dockyards in Navy Bay. The present
limestone citadel, constructed between 1832 and 1837, re-
placed the old fort as part of a larger plan for the defence
of the recently completed Rideau Canal. Commissariat stores
were built to join the advanced battery with the main fort
in 1841-42. Fort Henry was garrisoned by British troops
until 1871, when Canadian Gunnery Schools (forerunner of
the Royal Canadian Artillery) took over. Abandoned by the
military in 1891, the fort fell into disrepair. Restoration
work began in 1936, and two years later Fort Henry opened
as a historical museum.

Le premier fort Henry est bâti pendant la guerre de 1812 pour protéger les arsenaux britanniques à Navy Bay. La citadelle en pierre à chaux, construite entre 1832 et 1837, remplace l'ancien fort dans le cadre d'un plan de défense du Canal Rideau récemment terminé. Les entrepôts de l'intendance sont construits en 1841-1842 pour relier la batterie avancée au bâtiment principal. Des troupes britanniques restent en garnison au fort Henry jusqu'en 1871, lorsque l'École canadienne d'artillerie (qui deviendra l'Artillerie royale canadienne) prend la relève. Abandonné par les militaires en 1891, le fort tombe en ruines. Les travaux de restauration commencent en 1936 et deux ans plus tard un musée historique ouvre ses portes dans le fort Henry.
