MacLeod, Hugh Murray - Major, Born 1st January, 1919, at Glace Bay, N.S, Educated at New Glasgow High School, Entered the service of the Bank 19th July, 1937. Served at New Glasgow. On active service with The Pictou Highlanders 21st August, 1940, in the rank of Lieutenant. Captain in May, 1943; Major in September, 1943. Transferred to The North Nova Scotia Highianders (M.G.) in January, 1941, Overseas in 1941. Took commando training in Scotland. Returned to Canada and served with 1st Canadian Paratroop Battalion at Fort Benning, Ga,, U.S.A., and later at Camp Shilo, Man. Overseas with his Unit in September, 1943, Led his Company on D-Day as pathfinders for Airborne Division. Killed in action 7th June, 1944, at Varieville, Normandy. (Major MacLeod was an outstanding athlete, winning Dominion championship honours, and captaining the New Glasgow football and track teams.) <br><i>From a memorial booklet prepared by the Canadian Bank of Commerce.</i>
