Mr. Stanway recalls how his battery was mistakenly attacked by an American fighter, which they in turn shot down.

And I mean it was around Agira that I think we shot down a German, American plane. He strafed us, and we shot him down. All hell broke loose. But we were there you know. I think it was Agira. After they’d been taken by the infantry and we were going through, and we shot this plane down. It wasn’t on our gun, but our troop, and he was strafing us and he was, we were maybe three of four miles behind or something. I don’t know, you know, but the front lines. We were never up until we got up to later on in Italy. There we were up with the infantry. The town had been taken and the American aircraft space was right in the town. Our convoy was there, and one of the guns shot him down. And in fact, a couple of us there. They had machine guns. They were shooting machine guns too, because we were sort of on the move. So they had to unload one gun, as far as I know. That’s what it was and I remember coming back later on, said it was an American colonel, lieutenant colonel or something that was way out of line or something...
