I didn't ask for the job but it just wound up and it wound up that I was a top honcho and I was for a long time up in the mines.
Interviewer: How did the men, your fellow POWs, feel about you being a honcho?
They liked me. I will say that, the men liked me, all my crew liked me because as a honcho, I would come along from car to car going to these guys, I had about 40 guys and I had about four men to a car so we had about ten cars. And I'd help guys load this car, and I'd help guys load that car, and some guys having a bad time with a (inaudible), I'd take the (inaudible). As a honcho, I didn't have to work but I did, and I worked hard, and I continuously helped guys, the weaker guys especially. And my guys did like me, I'm aware of that, yeah.
