WOI Evans served as air gunner on 619 (RAF) Squadron and was the only Canadian on the crew of Lancaster LM209. On the night of 11/12 September 1944, 226 Lancasters and 14 Mosquitos of No 5 Group were sent on an operation to the German city of Darmstadt. 12 Lancasters were lost, or 5.3 per cent of the force.
LM209 was airborne 2045 on 11 Sep 44 and crashed 0030 12 Sep 44 into a dense wood, about 1 km SW of Darmstadt Airfield. The wreckage lay undiscovered until 10 May 47, when the authorities examined a large crater and recovered the remains of the crew. All were initially taken for burial to Neckargemund. They have been subsequently re-interred in Durnbach War Cemetery.
The other aircrew were: S/L R.A.Squibbs, Sgt A.Furnival; F/S J.Singer; F/O J.F.Parry; Sgt J.Davison; Sgt D.Greenley.

CIMETIÈRE DE GUERRE DE DURNBACH Allemagne
Durnbach est un village à 16 kilomètres à l'est de Bad Tolz, une ville située à 48 kilomètres au sud de Munich. Le cimetière de guerre de Durnbach est à 3 kilomètres au nord du village de Gmund am Tegernsee. En suivant la A8 à partir de Munich, tournez à l'intersection Holzkirchen, prenant ainsi la route 318 en direction de Gmund am Tegernsee. Au carrefour avec la 427, tournez à gauche sur la Miesbach. Le cimetière se trouve à gauche, à 500 mètres environ du carrefour entre la 318 et la 472.
