At the head of Cadet Ludford's grave, in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Barrie, Ontario, stands this private monument. Its inscription is badly weathered and only barely legible: "JOHN EDWARD LUDFORD BORN IN CARACAS VENEZUELA FEB. 1, 1898 KILLED IN FLYING ACCIDENT AT CAMP BORDEN SEPT. 18, 1917". This report of Cadet Ludford's death appeared at page 5 in the September 20, 1917 issue of the Barrie Examiner newspaper (Barrie, Ontario). It includes a couple of obvious inaccuracies, in that it identifies Ludford as a member of the "American Flying Corps" (rather than the Royal Flying Corps) whose hometown was "Baracas" (rather than Caracas). Note: Camp Hoare was the Royal Flying Corps airfield at Camp Borden, west of Barrie, Ontario, named after Lieutenant-Colonel (later Brigadier-General) C.G. Hoare, the commanding officer of the RFC in Canada.
