Overview:
Shaping Purpose offers a course that engages Veterans and their partners to work together to identify their gifts, passions, and personal values as part of helping them define their new identity in life after service.
Project Goals:
The main goals of this project were to:
- assess the psycho-social outcomes of the Shaping Purpose program for transitioning Veterans and their domestic partners while they participated in the program; and
- develop an evidence-based construct and measurement tool for defining a successful transition to civilian life for Veterans and their domestic partners.
Project Activities:
To achieve these goals, the project team completed the following activities:
- facilitated four-day virtual courses for Veterans and their partners to develop and prepare their “life plan”;
- developed an evidence-based tool to measure the various elements of a successful transition to life after service; and
- administered questionnaires and conducted interviews to Shaping Purpose participants upon course completion.
Project Results:
All planned sessions have been completed with approximately 300 Veterans and their partners participating in the Shaping Purpose course. Almost all participants accomplished the goal of having a well-documented “life plan” including “SMART” goals and points of accountability to accomplish these goals. Feedback gathered through participant questionnaires and follow-up interviews showed that this course has achieved its goals. This information will also be used to further refine the course content.
