Province: | New Brunswick |
Period: | Fiscal year 2020-2021 |
Funding: | $6,750.00 |
Overview:
Ksalsuti Wellness Resources is an Indigenous organization that used funding from the Veteran and Family Well-Being Fund to support its Turtle Island Workshops. The workshops address the social and emotional needs of elementary aged children using culturally relevant and engaging social stories.
Project goals:
The goals of this project were to:
- Partner with the Gagetown Military Family Resource Centre to develop two workshops, one for caregivers and one for children, based on the book, Hunter Makes a Choice;
- Help children develop the necessary skills to make good choices; and
- Teach caregivers techniques on how to reinforce positive decision making and correct negative choices.
Project activities:
Ksalsuti Wellness Resources planned to host two workshops in New Brunswick.
Project results:
Ksalsuti Wellness Resources trained four child and mental health professionals, two of whom are Indigenous, to deliver the workshops. They expected 20 attendees for each of these two workshops but, unfortunately only four individuals attended. This is likely due to the numerous COVID-19 outbreaks prior to these workshops which created strong hesitation to attend in-person events. Nonetheless, the workshops will be useful in delivering future programs at the Military Family Resource Centre as well as other settings.
